Askеɗ іf Mr Albanese had ƅeen poⲟrly advised іn һis attack,

‘All he’ѕ dօing is talking ar᧐und the issue ɑnd he’s blaming mee ɑnd he’s blaming other MP’ѕ fοr also

Smelling blood, Opposition leader Peter Dutton ѕaid the Pгime Minister ѕhould refer hіmself to tthe anti-corruption commission оver the flight upgrades.

front row of the International Grand Slam. He’ѕ tthe fiгѕt Pгime Minister wһo Ӏ’ve еver sеen do thаt.
‘Тhаt to me іs a sign tһat he doesn’t quite get ԝhat it looks like to ⲟthers when he’s on the
gravy train. And I thіnk (the claims in the book are) јust ɑnother exampⅼe off that.’
In Australian politrics іt’ѕ regular practise ffor аn MP’s travel too Ƅe booked
in economy, then someone in theіr office phones the airline and ɑsks іf tһeir flight can be upgraded.
The difference with the Рrime Minister іѕ thhat ‘he had a very direct ⅼine to Alan Joyce,’ Aston ѕaid.
‘Ꭲhе other thing іs there’s a difference bеtween aan upgrade whеre
it’s іn the booking aand if the seat’s еmpty
whеn the flight closes, yоu’ll gеt upgraded.
‘This iѕ ⅾifferent. This is a confirmed upgrade wһere tһe ticket іѕ converted and you are guaranteed.
Yоu’rе nott going to the airport crossing yoսr fingers going
“Geez, I hope there is a spare seat”.
‘You’re guaranteed. Үou turn up knowing yoᥙ’re gеtting a seat
аnd the only person ɑt Qantas who cɑn issue those types
oof upgrades is the CEO.Ⲛo other executive cɑn do that.
‘So it is beyond question tһat Alan joints authorised these upgrades (for Anthony Albanese).’
Aston enjoyed mаny upgrades to the pointy ennd of planes ԁuring
his time as a travel journalist, аnd understands tһe attraction for politicians to
get uⲣ there.
‘Tһese things are tempting аnd it’s human nature tоo. Ⲟnce you’ve
experienced tһe ffront оf the plane, it’s ѵery hard
to go back.
‘For politicians, they гun around with all thеse staff and tһey’ve goot chauffeured cars аnd thеy
fly іn business, but tһey don’t gget paid like
CEOs …
‘Τhey’re not in a situation ᴡheгe theү can afford to go flying
ɑround іn tһe fгont of tһe plane օn personal travel.
‘А normal person wouⅼd ѕay “Therefore I won’t (fly business class). But (for politicians) it’s a culture off entitlement.’
Aston iss careful too point ouut that most people would say politicians are ‘very well paid compared to the average worker’.
But that doesn’t stop some MPs from desperately eeking a free ride, whether it’s a flight upgrade, concert tickets or the executive box at sporting events.
Late on Wednesday night, a spokeswoman Mr Albanese said ‘The Prime Minister did not ever call Alan Joyce seeking an upgrade’.
‘All travel has been appropriately declared and is a matter of public record.’
Daily Mail Australia has contacted Qantas for comment.

WELLINGTON, Dec 10 (Reuters) – Surging іnterest іn vaping among үoung
Νew Zealanders mаy undermine a government rackdown on tthe tobacco industry annd itѕ aim to get people to kick the habit, healthcare and anti-tobacco experts
szid оn Friday.
New Zealand plans to ban young people from ever buying cigarettes in thеіr lifstime іn ⲟne оf tһe woгld’ѕ toughest crackdowns ⲟn the tobacco industry, arguing tһat otһer efforts tⲟ sgamp oսt smoking ԝere taкing too long.
The new regulations, һowever, ɗo not cover vaping, ѡhich
іt said ᴡas mᥙch less harful tһan smoking annd can hepp some people
tⲟ quit smoking.
“It’s fantastic having a generation that is smoke free but there is some concern around the messaging of using vaping to quit smoking, and that vaping is less harmful or without harm,” sаid Letitia Harding,
chief executive оf tһe Asthma and Respiratory Foundation (ARFNZ), ᴡhich campaigns ⲟn behalf ⲟf peiple ᴡith asthma and ߋther respiratory conditions.
Vaping involves heating ɑ liquid that contains nicotine
in what is calⅼеd an e-cigarette and turning
іt into a vapour that users inhale. Itts ⅼong-term health impacs are llargely unknown.
A nationwide survey of 19,000 secondary school stydents ⅼast
month ѕhowed that more than quarter regularlyy vaped, ѡhile about 15%
reported smoking regular, combustible cigarettes.
Thee findings ѕhowed a marked increase іn vaping оѵer the pаst tѡo
years ago.
Thhe survey by ARFNZ ɑnd thе Secondary Principals´ Associiation оf NZ, an independent
organisation representing head teachers, f᧐und young people aгe picking սp hіgh nicotine vapes without ever haᴠing smoked а cigarette, and qᥙickly ƅecoming addicted t᧐ nicotine.
“We absolutely have a problem of vaping and in 15 years we’ll be trying to get these youth out of vapes,” Harding ѕaid.
Nеw Zealand wass late iin regulating vaping аnd is stiⅼl
relativeⅼy liberal, allowing սp to 60 milligrams оf nicotine pеr millimetre of liquid compared ᴡith the EU which has a 20 milligram cap.
Australia ѕaid in Octⲟber thhat people ԝould no loknger be abⅼe to buy nicotine vapkng products ѡithout а prescription.
“Ultimately, tobacco is one of the deadliest substances that people can take and vapes do not have the harms associated with them, and that’s why we’re taking a risk-proportionate approach to these choices,”
Asaociate Health Minister Ayesha Verrall ѕaid
on Thursɗay ѡhile announcing tһe smoking ban.
VAPING DEMAND
Οnly somee 11.6% of New Zealanders ᧐vеr the age off 15 smoke cigarettes buut a fallihg smoking rate һas bеen closely linked ѡith a
rising vaping rate, wіth about 600 approved vaping retailers tо meet
the demand.
The Ԝorld Health Organization ѕaid іn Juⅼy thɑt the tobacco industry’ѕ sleek marketig іѕ attracting youngsters t᧐
e-cigarettes, ѡhich cɑn lead to tobacco addiction.
Ꮮarge Tobacco firms wеre quick to switch
to e-cigarettes thaat offer differеnt flavours and сreate designs targeting a new
generation ᧐f ᥙsers.
Marlboro cigarette maker Philip Morris noow sells iqos iluma prime รีวิว,
ɑ device tat heats up but doeѕ not burn packages ߋf ground-up tobacco, tto cresate ɑ nicotine-filled aerosol ѕimilar to tat produced
by е-cigarettes.
British American Tobacco sells е-cigarettes սnder thе Vuse brand, ԝhile Imperial Brands
markets Blu е-cigarettes.
Vapiing can be effective for adults who wɑnt to quit but it іs being targeted
at young people, sаіd Associate Professor Collin Tukuitonga, aat tthe Faculty οf Medxical aand Health
Sciences,University of Auckland.
“It’s inevitable that people pick up vaping because access to tobacco is becoming really difficult. So there needs to be a planned and considered social media campaign on dangers of vaping,” һе said.

Lisa Vanderpump has purchased a $5 million Las Vegas mansion.
The 64-year-old Bravo beauty decided to buy the Sin City abode after taking
an in-person tour of the premises, which is situated on a golf course,
sources told TMZ on Monday.
The reality star-restaurateur visited the home following production of the second season of her Hulu series Vanderpump Villa,

The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills alum’s home in Las Vegas includes amenities such as a
large pool and incredible views of the surrounding desert area, according to the outlet.
The English socialite has been busy decorating the mansion and has ‘already settled in,’ insiders told the outlet.

Australian politicians are almost always opting to fly with Qantas on taxpayer-funded trips, despite
Virgin offering cheaper tickets.
Federal MPs flew with the national carrier for 80 per cent of work trips last year despite
it not always being the cheapest route, according to travel data provided to the
government.
While politicians and their staffers are required to book the cheapest flight,
it also has to be the most efficient, with Qantas offering the most routes between major cities.
MPs are banned from accruing frequent flyer points on taxpayer-funded trips like ordinary Aussies
can, but they can can receive lifetime status credits, which allows access to airport lounges
and flight upgrades.
‘How else can one explain the extraordinary dominance of Qantas in securing bookings
by parliamentarians and their staff?’ Myriam Robin wrote in an opinion piece for the Australian Financial Review.
‘There’s nothing like accruing status credits on someone else’s dime.’
Transport Minister Catherine King has since committed
to a review of flight bookings by government officials
which will be conducted by the Department of Finance this year, despite there being just two months
left of 2024.
Politicians’ preference for Qantas may also be put down to the airline’s exclusive invite-only ‘Chairman’s Lounge’.

The Flying Kanga-RORT – why you’re footing the bill as
airlines wine and dine pollies in VIP club
Daily Mail Australia in August revealed that nearly every single federal politician in the country has accepted free membership of the club.
Qantas and the Albanese government have both denied the airline enjoys any disproportionate
level of influence over the country’s political classes.
A Daily Mail Australia audit of the members’ interest registers – in both the
House of Representatives and the Senate – revealed almost 93 per cent of the nation’s leaders have been ‘gifted’ membership to the lavish,
all-inclusive lounge.
The high profile ranks of government giftees include Prime Minister Anthony Albanese as well as every member of his 22-person Cabinet, his seven-person Outer Ministry and all
12 assistant ministers.
While most politicians declared their Qantas’ privileges as a ‘gift’, Labor MP Marion Scrymgour listed her membership as her ‘Chairman Lounge entitlement’.
Daily Mail Australia in August revealed that
nearly every single federal politician in the country has accepted free membership
of Qantas’ exclusive Chairman’s Lounge.
And it’s not just politicians on the take, with more than 60
MPs – including Marles, Chalmers, King, Bill Shorten, Zali Steggall and Tanya Plibersek – disclosing their spouses have also been granted unfettered, independent access to Qantas’ luxurious members only lounge.
Often touted as ‘the most exclusive club in the country’, membership to the Chairman’s Lounge has long been veiled in secrecy.
Even the entrances to each of the country’s six opulent VIP
clubs – in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Canberra and Perth airports – are
suitably discreet.
Though, once inside, the designer lounges are immediately
more ostentatious, with free à la carte fine dining, table service, a decadent selection of wines and Champagne and a discreet army of dedicated
lounge attendants.
Membership to the club is ‘priceless’ – it cannot be bought for any amount of money nor obtained via any amount of frequent flyers points.
Instead, each member is hand-picked and approved by the company’s chief
executive and chairman.

Joker: Folie À Deux is heading to streaming, just weeks after its theatrical release.
The movie, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, will be available to rent
from home starting October 29, in an effort to recoup some of
Warner Bros. investment into the film, as per Variety.
The musical, which bombed at the box office, is ‘poised to lose at least $150 million to $200 million in its theatrical
run’ according to the publication.
The movie studio spent about $200 million to produce the film and about $100 million on marketing and distribution, according to the report.
It would need to gross about $450 million at the box office to break
even — when factoring in the cut taken by theaters — though Warner Bros.
sources claim the number is $375 million.

A Warner Bros. spokesperson responded to the report, saying ‘Any estimates suggested by anonymous “insiders”
or “rival executives” are grossly wrong and continues a trend where rumor is reported as fact.’
‘The film continues to play in theatrical release, included with this week’s opening in China,

So far, the musical about Batman’s nemesis has grossed $51.5

two weeks of release.
In comparison, the first Joker grossed $96.2 million domestically and $248.4 million globally after three days of

Madame Web — which notably also flopped in theaters earlier this year and
also received terrible reviews — holds a higher score with a C+.
On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie currently holds an audience
score of 31% and a critic score of 32%.
The sequel has been roundly criticized for being a musical and ‘ignoring’ the DC fanbase –
with an agent familiar with director Todd Phillips’ process
telling Variety he ‘wanted nothing to do with DC’ during
the making of the film, with DC bosses James Gunn and
Peter Safran notably absent from the film’s LA premiere afterparty last month.
A source said: ‘If the first movie was about some down-on-his-luck, mentally ill guy in a downtrodden city, it makes maybe $150 [million] worldwide.
Not a billion. People showed up because that guy was Joker.’
In an apparent snub by Phillips, the opening sequence of the film does not include a DC Studios logo.
A Warner spokesman added that a DC logo appears at the
end of the Joker sequel, while Phillips declined to
comment to the publication.
Several frictions are said to have developed between Phillips, DC and Warner- with claims that Michael DeLuca, Chairperson of Warner Bros.
Entertainment, and CEO Pamela Abdy seemed ‘unwilling’ to say no to Phillips due to his huge past successes.
It is claimed Phillips would ‘only’ speak with DeLuca and Abdy rather
than Gunn and Safran – who took control of DC two
months before production began on Joker 2 in December 2022.
Gunn and Safran did attend the first director’s cut screening for
the studio but Phillips fueled rift speculation when he
told a reporter: ‘With all due respect to them, this is kind of
a Warner Bros. movie.’
Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav also met with
Phillips shortly after WarnerMedia and Discovery merged in April
2022 and was ‘open to filming in Los Angeles if the director would
make the sequel at a lower price point.’
The studio wanted to film in London which would have cost around 20 per
cent less.
A source directly involved with the film recently shared: ‘The one
thing about genre stuff: If you don’t listen and pay attention to what the fan expectations are, you’re going to
fail’; director Todd Phillips seen with Gaga and Phoenix at the LA premiere September 30
However, Phillips insisted on filming in LA with the
budget remaining static.
A Warner spokesman told the publication the studio ‘supported the
decision to film in Los Angeles’.
A source directly involved with the film said: ‘No one could
get through to Todd. And the one thing about genre stuff:
If you don’t listen and pay attention to what the fan expectations are, you’re going to fail.
Insiders also claim studio bosses did not want to premiere the film at the Venice Film Festival,
but Phillips pushed back – with a Warner spokesman saying
the studio ‘fully supported the decision to bring the film
to Venice.
Along with Gaga and Phoenix, other stars that had appeared in the sequel include Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener,
Zazie Beatz and Steve Coogan.

Amid tepid returns at the box office for Joker: Folie à Deux, a number of fans of the sequel took to social media over the
weekend in defense of the sequel to Todd Phillips’ 2019 motion picture.
The film, which sees Joaquin Phoenix return to the
lead role of The Joker/Arthur Fleck, debuted to a paltry $40 million at the domestic box office, good enough for the weekend’s top spot, but less than projections, and
half that of its predecessor.
Amid the early returns, a number of fans took up for the movie and its cinematic depth, in breaking away from
the cookie cutter nature of sequels to introduce a musical element not present in the
first film, with Lady Gaga joining the franchise.
‘Joker 2 was amazing,’ one user said, adding that it was ‘100%
as divisive as people are making it out to be. I love
that the film didn’t try to be a traditional sequel, and
fully committed to the storytelling they presented. It never deviated to
be a film full of Easter eggs or any other crowd pleasing aspects.’
Another user said, ‘I kinda loved Joker 2. I loved how it was structured as a meta-exploration of the first film’s fandom and the musical elements were a
lot of fun.’

One user marveled that Joker 2 is ‘getting universal

in years is expected.’
A user said that ‘Joker 2 is genuinely such a clever movie which carries the character study format of the first movie into the

Some users said that the bad word-of-mouth the film was suffering from was
impacting the opinions of moviegoers.
‘The Joker 2 hate is so forced like did we watched the same movie????????’ one user said, while another said the hate for the film is ‘so unjustified.’
One fan predicted that the motion picture with stand the test of time with audiences.
‘I may be one of ten people who genuinely liked the Joker 2.
Remember me when society circles back to it in 10 years and says its a masterpiece,’ said the user.
‘The world just wasn’t ready for it yet.’
Said one user: ‘I actually thoroughly enjoyed it. If you don’t like musicals or ‘art house’
style films you probably won’t like it because it’s not made for you.
The dynamic between Harley and Joker was brilliant and showcased the ‘obsession’ that
is key to that duo.’
The movie’s box office collapse was swift and has many in the industry wondering:
How did the highly anticipated sequel to an Oscar-winning, billion-dollar film with
the same creative team go wrong? Just three weeks ago, tracking services pegged the movie for a $70 million debut, which would still have been down a fair amount
from Joker’s record-breaking $96.2 million launch in October 2019.
A number of fans took to social media to defend the controversial sequel
Amid the early returns, a number of fans took up for the movie and its cinematic depth,

introduce a musical element not present in the first film,
with Lady Gaga joining the franchise
Reviews were mixed out of the Venice Film Festival, where it premiered in competition like the first movie and even got a 12-minute standing ovation.
But the homecoming glow was short-lived, and the
fragile foundation would crumble in the coming weeks with its Rotten Tomatoes score dropping from 63 percent at Venice to 33 percent by its first weekend in theaters. Perhaps
even more surprising were the audience reviews: Ticket buyers
polled on opening night gave the film a deadly D CinemaScore.
Exit polls from PostTrak weren’t any better. It got a meager half star out of five possible.
‘That´s a double whammy that´s very difficult to recover from,’ said Paul Dergarabedian, the senior media analyst for Comscore.
‘The biggest issue of all is the reported budget.
A $40 or $50 million opening for a less expensive movie would be a solid debut.’
Joker: Folie à Deux cost at least twice as much as the first film to
produce, though reported figures vary at exactly how pricey
it was to make. Phillips told Variety that it was less than the reported $200 million; Others have it pegged at $190 million. Warner Bros.
released the film in 4,102 locations in North America.
About 12.5 percent of its domestic total came from 415 IMAX screens.
Internationally, it’s earned $81.1 million from 25,788 screens, bringing
its total global earnings estimate to $121.1
million. In the next two weeks, Joker 2 will also open in Japan and China.
Second place went to Universal and DreamWorks Animation’s The
Wild Robot, which added $18.7 million in its second
weekend, bringing its domestic total to nearly $64
million. Globally, it’s made over $100 million. Warner Bros.’
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice took third place in weekend
five, Paramount’s Transformers One landed in fourth and Universal and Blumhouse’s Speak No Evil rounded out the top five.
The other big new release of the weekend, Lionsgate’s White Bird, flopped with just $1.5
million from just over 1,000 locations, despite an A+ CinemaScore.
Overall, the weekend is up from the same frame last
year, but Joker’s start is an unwelcome twist for theater owners hoping to narrow the
box office deficit.
The sequel has already been the subject of
many think pieces, some who posit that it was deliberately alienating fans
of the first movie
Phillips and star Joaquin Phoenix have said they aspired to make something
as ‘audacious’ as the first film. The sequel added Lady Gaga into the fold ,
as a Joker superfan, and delved further into the mind of Arthur Fleck, imprisoned at Arkham and awaiting trial for the murders he committed in the first.
It´s also a musical, with elaborately imagined song and dance numbers to old
standards. Gaga even released a companion album called ”Harlequin,’ alongside the film.
The sequel has already been the subject of many
think pieces, some who posit that it was deliberately alienating fans of the first movie.
In cruder terms, it´s been called a ‘middle finger.’ But fans often ignore
the advice of critics, especially when it comes to opening their wallets to see revered comic book characters on the
big screen.
‘They took a swing for the fences,’ Dergarabedian said.
‘But except for a couple of outliers, audiences in 2024 seem to want to know what they´re getting when they´re going to the theater.
They want the tried and true, the familiar.’
Deadline editor Anthony D´Alessandro thinks the problem started
with the idea to make the Joker sequel a musical.
‘No fan of the original movie wanted to see a musical sequel,’ he wrote on Saturday.
The first film was also divisive and the subject of much discourse,
then about whether it might send the wrong message to the wrong
type of person. And yet people still flocked to see what
the fuss was about. Joker went on to pick up 11 Oscar nominations, including best picture
and best director, and three wins. It also made over $1 billion and was the
highest-grossing R-rated film of all time, until this summer when Marvel’s
Deadpool & Wolverine took the crown.
Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S.
and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore. Final domestic figures will be released
Monday.

shares a revealing look into her personal life and journey – from
a childhood in small-town Slovenia, to globetrotting pursuits as a young model, to her courtship and
marriage to one of the world’s most famous men.
She also corrects the record, challenges her critics and clarifies
her positions on a range of issues from abortion (she’s pro-choice)
to the inclusion of biological men in women’s sports (female athletes must
always be ‘protected and respected’).
In fact, she sounds like many female voters grappling with the whiplash changes wrought by Joe Biden and Kamala Harris’s time
in the White House.
The bold, confident, free-thinking modern woman who may soon occupy the
White House is not named Kamala Harris. (Pictured: Kellyanne with
Donald and Melania Trump at the White House in 2019).
‘The country is suffering,’ she writes. ‘We have wars around the world…
The border is open and dangerous… a lot of fentanyl is coming over
and killing our youth…. The economy is really not great, inflation is
high.’
I’ve known and worked alongside Melania for many years, and
regard her as a friend.
She has been unfairly maligned and the target of so much speculation and prevarication. That is why it has been so wonderful to see her own ‘October Surprise’,
a memoir in her own words on her own timeline, showing the measured,
magnanimous woman tens of millions of Americans adore.
Earlier this year, Melania and I lost our mothers just weeks apart.
Even as she navigated her loss in public view, Melania made every
effort to be there for me. She and President Trump called,
sent flowers, handwritten notes and checked in with me time and again.
After my divorce was finalized last year, Melania showed up again, supporting me as any caring friend
would and encouraging me to swing open soldered
doors following a time of personal upheaval and transition.

KELLYANNE CONWAY: Don’s back! Here’s his new 2024 blueprint
And it was the same story when we worked together in the White House.
While Jill Biden has insisted on being called ‘Doctor’, Melania was admired and beloved by the political and permanent staffers alike, asking after their children by name, welcoming them to events big and small, and treating them with inclusivity and
respect.
Known as a protective and present mother,
Melania now uses her memoir to call out the ‘sheer malice’ of unfunny comic Rosie
O’Donnell who, in 2016, tweeted despicable and totally unfounded claims
about Barron, then aged 10.
It was just weeks after Trump had stunned the world and won, and
the same liberal media and Hollywood types, who perpetuated every vicious attack against him, reveled as O’Donnell’s vile lie wormed
its way across social media.
It was a shock to see such naked cruelty towards a First Child, especially
when so many of us had treated Chelsea Clinton and the Obama daughters like Fabergé eggs.
Kids (including mine) should always be off
limits.
I’ve known and worked alongside Melania for many
years, and regard her as a friend. (Pictured together in 2018 visiting Cincinnati
Children’s Hospital Medical Center).
Earlier this year, Melania and I lost our mothers just
weeks apart. Even as she navigated her loss in public view,
Melania made every effort to be there for me. She and President Trump called, sent flowers, handwritten notes and checked
in with me time and again. (Pictured: Together with Trump in the White House in 2019).
But instead of going to war, Melania acted swiftly and tenderly to
shield her son. She channeled maternal outrage into a first lady’s focus on initiatives centered around children’s wellness and cyberbullying awareness.
Her ‘Be Best’ campaign remains a highlight of
her time in office.
Melania has never been one for preening and posturing.
Other first ladies used their roles to land on the cover of fashion magazines,
but she did so on her own, years before, as a successful model.
Even when I’ve suggested she push back on myriad false claims
made by the media or ungrateful former staffers who have
returned her trust in them with self-serving lies and revisionist history,
she has declined, knowing that her silence is always more powerful.
Behind closed doors, Trump has, for decades, regarded his wife as a top confidante and counselor.
Whether as an international business mogul, a TV star or, lately,
leader of the free world, it is Melania’s opinion that he has consistently sought.
Trump enjoys the company of plenty of friends, taking a range of advice,
but he speaks of – and to – Melania in an entirely
unique way. Really, he fears yet reveres her. He respects her
independence, seeks her input, trusts her keen eye, sharp ear and sense of people.
I have witnessed their relationship up close, and it is one fundamentally built on mutual love and respect.
Recently, as Barron was heading off for college and Melania
was preparing to publish her memoir, I jokingly asked Trump
how it might feel to be the second most popular man and
the second most prominent author in the household. He
chuckled and relented.
Melania Trump has plenty to say and nothing to prove.
She is not a typical political spouse rushing to the cameras
on matters that are best handled privately, or loudly offering
insights or slights about her husband’s political opponents à la Hillary Clinton and Michelle Obama.
She is an asset, a partner, an equal who is neither trying to control – looking at you,
Jill Biden – nor controlled by her partner. She is what many feminists insist they are:
independent, a product of her own choices,
comfortable in her own skin.
She has been by Trump’s side the entire time. Though never in his shadow.
In fact, from that very first moment they descended the golden escalator, she’s been leading the
way.
About 50 at maximum settings.

Do Greens and crossbenchers who claim that transparency and integrity
is at the heart of their reason for entering Parliament in the first place hear themselves?
In the past few days they have mounted self-serving arguments against proposed electoral reforms that the
major parties look set to come together to support.
The reforms include caps for how much money wealthy individuals can donate, caps
on the amount candidates can spend in individual electorates to prevent the equivalent of an arms race, and a $90million limit on what any party can spend
at an election – actually less than the major parties currently spend.
The proposed new laws also include lower disclosure thresholds for donations, thus increasing
the transparency of who makes political donations in the first place.
So the wealthy wont be able to hide behind anonymity while using their cash to influence election outcomes – and the extent to which they can use their wealth at all
will be limited.
The bill will further improve transparency by also increasing the speed and frequency that
disclosures of donations need to be made.
At present we have the absurd situation in which
donations get made – but you only find out the details of who
has given what to whom many months later, well after elections are won and lost.
In other words, what is broadly being proposed will result in much
greater transparency and far less big money being injected into
campaigning by the wealthy.
Teal Kylea Tink claimed the major parties were ‘running scared’ with the policy and warned the reform
would ‘not stop the rot’
Greens senate leader Larissa Waters (left) fired a warning shot – saying if it serves only the major parties ‘it’s a rort, not reform’. Teal independent ACT senator David Pocock (right) said:
‘What seems to be happening is a major-party stitch-up’
Anyone donating more than $1,000 to a political party, as opposed to $16,000 under the current rules,
will need to disclose having done so. And how much they can donate will be capped.
Yet the Greens and Teals have quickly condemned the proposed new laws,
labeling them a ‘stitch-up’, ‘outrageous’ and ‘a rort, not a reform’.
They have lost their collective minds after finding out that Labor’s proposal just might secure the support of the opposition.
I had to double check who was criticising what exactly before even starting to write this column.
Because I had assumed – incorrectly – that these important
transparency measures stamping out the influence of the wealthy must have been proposed
by the virtue-signalling Greens or the corruption-fighting Teals,
in a united crossbench effort to drag the major parties closer to accountability.
More fool me.
The bill, designed to clean up a rotten system, is being put forward
by Labor and is opposed by a growing cabal of crossbenchers.
It makes you wonder what they have to hide. Put simply, the Greens and
Teals doth protest too much on this issue.
Labor is thought to be trying to muscle out major political donors such as Clive Palmer
Another potential target of the laws is businessman and Teal funder Simon Holmes à Court
The Greens have taken massive donations in the past, contrary to their irregular calls to tighten donations rules (Greens
leader Adam Bandt and Senator Mehreen Faruqi are
pictured)
The major parties have long complained about the influence the
likes of Simon Holmes à Court wields behind the scenes amongst the Teals.
And we know the Greens have taken massive donations from the wealthy in the past,
contrary to their irregular calls to tighten donations rules.
Now that tangible change has been proposed, these bastions of virtue are running
a mile from reforms that will curtail dark art of political donations.
The Labor government isn’t even seeking for these transparency rules to take effect immediately, by the way.
It won’t be some sort of quick-paced power play before the next election designed to catch the crossbench out.
They are aiming for implementation by 2026, giving everyone enough time to absorb and understand the
changes before preparing for them.
Don’t get me wrong, no deal has yet been done between Labor and the Coalition. I imagine the opposition want to go over the laws with a fine
tooth comb.
As they should – because it certainly isn’t beyond Labor to include hidden one-party advantages in the proposed design which
would create loopholes only the unions are capable of taking advantage of, therefore disadvantaging the Coalition electorally in the
years to come.
But short of such baked-in trickiness scuttling a deal to
get these proposed laws implemented, the crossbench should offer their support, not cynical opposition, to what is being advocated for.
They might even be able to offer something worthwhile
that could be incorporated in the package.
To not do so exposes their utter hypocrisy and blowhard false commentary about being in politics to ‘clean things
up’.

Bright and early, my old friend, the beauty and wellness
entrepreneur Liz Earle, is standing at my door clutching a Kilner jar with what looks
like a small sponge floating in murky water.
‘I made kombucha for you,’ she says with an enthusiasm I don’t entirely share.
(The sponge, it turns out, is the Scoby, or ‘symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast’, which is what’s used to ferment sweetened tea to make kombucha.
I don’t realise at the time, but this hideous thing takes weeks to develop and is in fact a very generous gift.)
The truth is, I’d drink (almost) anything if it gave me Liz’s zip.
At 61, a mother of five and a new grandmother, she honestly looks 20 years younger.
Fans of her YouTube channel and her 170,000 Instagram followers will know how bright and
smooth her skin is, but in person she is fizzing
with energy, too.
Liz and I have been friends for 25 years – over which time
she has somehow seemed to gain in vitality as I, nine years her junior, have…
well, deflated.
Beauty and wellness entrepreneur Liz Earle, right, and Beatrice Aidin met back in the 1990s when they were both beauty journalists
So here’s my plan. I am going to Live Like Liz for a full eight weeks, morning to night,
to see just how much I, too, can turn back the clock.
I am going to eat, drink and exercise like Liz, ‘ground
myself’ in a flower bed in my pyjamas like her, and even tape up my mouth à la Liz.
From my gut to my hormones, my brain to the very cells of my skin, I
will follow the ‘bio-hacks’ set out in her new book A Better Second Half:
Dial Back Your Age To Live A Longer, Healthier, Happier Life, which swiftly became a bestseller on its release this year.
Liz says it can’t fail, so long as I commit to it.
‘Who’s to say we can’t or shouldn’t change the way we age?’ she asks.
‘I was stronger, fitter and more capable in my 50s than I was in my 40s,
so why can’t I be even more so in my 60s, 70s and beyond?’
Perhaps more significantly, after the ‘car crash of emotional wreckage’ caused by the breakdown of her second marriage, and the divorce she went
through in 2020, she now says: ‘I’m happier at 61 than I was at 40.’
Career-wise, it shows. When we met back in the 1990s we
were both beauty journalists. At launches for new products, I’d merrily
down the free Krug while Liz sipped sparkling water.
‘Ah Bea, you were the yin to my yang,’ she says.
Now, her wellness empire has mushroomed…
and I’m suffering major work anxiety, a not-unrelated financial crisis and severe sciatica.
Frankly, I look and feel knackered. My skin is dull and I have dark circles under my eyes.
Physical pain interferes with my sleep, and I’ve been turning rather too readily to the sauvignon blanc
to help me nod off.
Food is not a priority: I’m either not interested
or craving sugar, which means I’m a good 10lb heavier than I should be.
So, can living like my rather fabulous friend make me feel as young as she
looks? More to the point – can I really stick to it, kombucha and all?
‘Come on Bea, get off your backside!’ Liz demands…
Liz (left) puts Beatrice through her paces in the gym. Beatrice needs
extra help with exercise because of her sciatica
Week one: I face up to my middle-age spread
Liz’s top-line diet philosophy is high-protein, low carb, meaning she’s a fan of lots of foods I love but didn’t think I should
eat: butter, unprocessed meat, avocados, good quality cheese,
taramasalata and thick Greek yoghurt.
High protein helps us ‘shift to a leaner, more toned shape,
and lose that middle-aged spread,’ she says.
Timing matters. Liz eats two meals a day – brunch around 11am and dinner at 7pm.
The order matters too: clear your plate of chicken before rice, because eating protein before carbs keeps blood sugar
levels stable.
In recent years she has increased her coffee intake
(before 2pm) because studies show four to five cups is ‘strongly associated
with living longer’ thanks to the bioactives in coffee beans such
as chlorogenic acid.
She eats wheatgerm, soya beans and nuts to up her intake
of spermidine – a dietary molecule that interacts with our DNA and mimics an anti-ageing process called autophagy, which de-ages us at a cellular level.
Alcohol is basically a no-no. Liz has the ‘occasional glass’ of wine or tequila, but never more than two and never alone.
I chuck out the ready meals and plonk, roll up my sleeves and start
cooking from scratch. I grill venison, roast a chicken and
make soups with the leftovers.
Eating at specific times works for me – I’m never
very hungry first thing – and enjoying the protein part of each meal first means
I’m fuller and find it easy to cut back on my carb portions.
Gut health is a big focus, which means more fermented foods.
Much to my surprise, I love the kombucha and soon start to brew
my own using Liz’s Scoby. But homemade kimchi –
fermented veg – is a harder sell. When a lunch guest asks me why I’m forcing myself to eat something I dislike so much,
I reply solemnly: ‘Liz told me to.’
Week two: I discover I can do only 3 press-ups
I really need help with exercise because sciatica means
my normal routine has gone to pot.
Thankfully, Liz reckons just ten minutes a day of
exercises such as squats, lunges and press-ups is more valuable in the long term than a high-intensity gym
session once a week or a long park run.
She introduces me to her personal trainer, Michael Garry, who delivers the (bombshell, but welcome)
news that running any distance over 5k can ‘start to have negative effects’
on our immune system and bone strength. If you’re a runner, make it harder by speeding
up your time, not increasing your distance.
At Michael’s insistence, I consult a physio about my
sciatica, and then he devises a daily regime for me. I try press-ups and make it to three.
Mortifying. Perseverance is clearly key. As are weights, especially in your 50s.
‘The more muscle you have, the more your bones are protected from osteoporosis, especially during midlife,’ says Michael.
For cardio, says Beatrice, I keep swimming twice a week.
But instead of plodding up and down the pool, I start to compete with myself, speeding up the
laps
For my slack and flabby upper arms, he advises shoulder presses and hammer curls,
with 3kg weights in both hands. I try tricep dips off a chair,
and quickly find I can increase my reps – until by week
four I’m doing two sets of 15.
I work out three times a week at home. At first the routine
takes 40 minutes but the more I do, the faster I do it, until the whole thing – stretching, press-ups, weights – takes
just 20 minutes.
For cardio, I keep swimming twice a week. But instead of plodding up and
down the pool, I start to compete with myself, speeding up the laps.
Week three: I slow the hormonal roller coaster
I’m menopausal and already on HRT, but I know I could improve how I feel,
which is sluggish and foggy.
Liz introduces me to something called the ‘estrobolome’ – the specific collection of bacteria
in the gut that influences how our body uses oestrogen. Put
simply, some microbes improve the efficiency with which oestrogen reaches
tissues around the body, meaning we use our dwindling supplies
more effectively.
The best way to support your estrobolome is by eating fibre from veg, seeds and nuts, plus some of the low-sugar fruits such as apples, berries
and plums. Back to the supermarket I go.
To boost the happy hormone serotonin, my saintly mentor insists I finish
my morning shower with a minimum 60-second blast of icy cold water,
resulting – she claims – in a ‘post-shock high’ and ‘genuine glow’.
Hmmm. I find it hard to relinquish the comfort of a hot shower and feel not happy but
mutinous as I step out of the bathroom shivering.
Week four: I stand in the flower bed
Living Like Liz means getting outside first thing in the morning and standing barefoot on the grass.
‘Grounding’ apparently enables electrons from the
surface of the Earth to transmit deep into the body, ‘where they
have an anti-inflammatory effect’.
Liz tells me she does this in the tranquil grounds of her glorious pile in the West Country.
I do it in a flower bed in my shared patio, still in my pyjamas,
and feel, well, very self-conscious. Later I graduate
to the park, and – look away now – tread in dog mess, which does not improve my emotional wellbeing.
She also encourages us to keep a Five Minute Gratitude Journal twice
a day. ‘Gratitude is… a superpower that improves longevity and supports
the immune system,’ she says.
I can’t help but think my better-off mate has rather a
lot more to smile about than me but, following
instructions, I write down three things I am
grateful for every morning, and every night a short list of ‘good things’ that happened
that day, plus another (longer) list of ‘things
that are concerning me’.
My scepticism around gratitude slowly lifts as I find it does make me realise what’s important
and what’s not. It helps me see that things are a lot brighter than I thought.
Packing in a rush for a weekend away, I can’t find
my journal and am surprised by how bereft I feel without it.
Week five: I start to sleep well
I’m a night owl – I stay up too late watching TV and end up hitting my snooze button past 8.30am…
and occasionally edging towards 10am.
Liz reckons anyone can improve their sleep if they follow her routine, which means setting an evening
alarm for 9pm – to remind yourself to start ‘winding down for bed’.
Emails, social media and TV are switched off, replaced by a printed book
or a podcast. She takes 120g of magnesium glycinate in a milky drink half an hour before bed (and stops eating two hours before).
Living Like Liz means getting outside first thing in the
morning
Liz wears a bamboo fibre nightie or pyjamas to keep warm because she sleeps with an open window,
which she covers with blackout blinds and curtains,
and sprinkles her pillow with a few drops of neat lavender essential oil.
I’m an e-book reader, so already failing at this routine.
Still, I leave my phone charging in the kitchen and buy a regular alarm clock.
The lavender oil makes me sneeze, so I spray my pillows
with C. Atherley Geranium Spray instead.
Oh, and I tape my lips up – Liz shows me how when she delivers the kombucha.
Forcing yourself to breathe through your nose is said
to promote more restful sleep.
All of this is time-consuming and takes practise,
but I find the ritual soothing. Five weeks in, I’m getting
to sleep earlier than I have for years – at 10.30pm after 20 minutes
drop-off time -and waking at 7.30am. How virtuous!
Week six: I crash off the wagon
I’m doing my best, but then I go for lunch with a friend who chirpily suggests
a glass of wine, which turns into a bottle.
And then a second. Later, with a daytime hangover, I head to M&S and find reduced
dauphinoise potatoes, which become dinner.
Liz has got me on a blood sugar tracker called Lingo
(£289 for two months – you jab a biosensor the size
and shape of a plastic bottle top into your upper arm, and then link it to an app on your phone),
which shows a massive post-potato spike and then a huge slump, which makes me tired and irritable.
Who knew that such deliciousness had such a high glycaemic load?
I call Liz to ‘fess up. ‘I have the odd day when I lie in, eat too much cake and drink
too much tequila,’ she says. ‘But that’s fine because you then know what to do
to put it right. It’s not about being perfect.’ Phew!
Week seven: I tackle my financial mess
Re-reading my journal really helps here. By documenting what I was
so worried about day by day, my perspective on it changes.
Here, in black and white, is a record of how I felt at the start of this
project and how I’ve evolved.
I’ve come unstuck – in a good way. I’m not going to pretend it’s been easy because change is uncomfortable, but
I realise there’s simply nothing to be gained from the worry spiral.
If freelance life is tough, and my income erratic, I’m going to do something about
it. Buoyed with the confidence that comes with action, I apply
for part-time admin jobs. As personal trainer Michael observes as we work out on Zoom, I wouldn’t have done this before.
He’s right. Finally I’ve started to take control.
Week eight: And the winner is…
So how have eight weeks of Living Like Liz changed me?
Physically, I’m in much better shape. I’ve lost 7 lb and
taken an extraordinary 5 in off my waist and 11 in off my body as a whole.
Those three pathetic press-ups have become a whopping
40 per workout, and the measly 3kg weights
are now 6kg, meaning I have proper bicep definition. The
sleeveless tops will be coming out again this party season.

Our essential guide to beating back pain: What’s causing your
aches
My skin is clearer, eyes brighter and face more
defined because I’ve reduced the carb-inducing bloat. I’m sleeping better and feeling infinitely less anxious.
Most remarkably – and this is really life-changing – my sciatica is almost gone and I can come off strong painkillers.
I know sciatica can disappear of its own accord, but the timing is surely no coincidence.
All those exercises have strengthened the muscles around my spine and buttocks and I’m convinced
it’s done the trick.
I meet Liz for lunch, nervous about whether she’ll see a difference.
‘Oh wow,’ she says, taking a good look at her pupil.
‘Those arms! You definitely look younger.’
We chat for a while and she adds: ‘You also seem more content and optimistic.
You have an inner glow and a halo of positivity.’
Well, yes, she would say that, wouldn’t she?
(Probably. Though Liz is known for her candour, so it’s not a given.)
‘I wasn’t sure you were going to prioritise yourself enough and commit,’ she admits ‘You weren’t
an easy nut to crack so I’m thrilled.’
I’m delighted with my gold star. And I’m grateful to her,
which is one of the key lessons I’ve learned.
Gratitude makes everything feel better.
That – along with the kombucha, ice-cold showers (which I have learned to
love) and the odd tequila – are the habits
I’ll hold on to. But not (shudder!) the kimchi or flower beds.
As Liz says, everyone deserves to have a better second half – and if I can do it,
anyone can.

Kamala Harris and Donald Trump are asking voter to choose between an immigration crackdown and reproductive rights
As their race for the US presidency comes down to the wire,
each major candidate has leaned heavily on a favorite theme
— abortion rights for Democrat Kamala Harris and border security for Republican Donald Trump.
In Arizona, their ideological duel has reached a white-hot peak, with both topics the subject of fiercely debated ballot referendums.
And in this key southwestern state — where the billionaire Trump lost to President Joe Biden in 2020
by a tiny margin of about 10,500 votes — every ballot truly will count.
In the mid-sized city of Tucson, hundreds of volunteers in orange T-shirts were
going door-to-door to try to persuade voters to back a ballot measure to inscribe abortion rights in the
state constitution — and, while they’re at it, to vote for Vice President
Harris.
To Grace Ireland, a 26-year-old activist, the abortion restrictions imposed by several Republican-controlled states amount to “a public health crisis that Donald Trump and the Republicans have created.”
She added, “Democrats and Kamala Harris are trying to push us forward and protect women’s health care and protect our democracy and protect all people.”
Une pancarte barrée du slogan “L’indifférence aux élections est dangereuse”, à Tucson, en Arizona, le 16 octobre 2024
Since 2022, when the US Supreme Court ended the constitutional protection of federal abortion rights,
Ireland, a registered nurse, has worked in several states where abortion is banned or severely limited.
Those restrictions have had sometimes disastrous consequences for
women having problem pregnancies or carrying nonviable
fetuses when doctors refuse to treat them.
“Women are going septic and dying because they cannot receive the care that they need,” she told AFP.
– ‘Abortion is murder’ –
As Ireland carries her message to potential voters, she noted,
particularly to young people who may be less likely to vote,
that it was Donald Trump who appointed the three justices who tipped the Supreme Court against abortion rights.
Donald Trump lors d’un meeting à Tempe, en Arizona, le 24 octobre 2024
“It’s important to reiterate that Donald Trump and these abortion bans are one and the same,” Ireland said.
But in Tucson there is little unanimity among young voters.
“I do think that abortion is murder,” said Pedro Lopez, a 20-year-old college
student.
“There are cases of incest or rape” that merit exceptions, he conceded, “but that’s very small.”
He also worries about the flow of undocumented migrants
that have entered the country from Mexico during the Biden-Harris administration.
“People that are entering the United States illegally… should be sent back to where they came from,” he said.
“My grandparents migrated from Mexico to the United States, and they did it the right way.”
So he plans not only to vote for Trump, but to back the proposal to let
local law enforcement detain, arrest and prosecute anyone suspected of having entered the country illegally — powers normally reserved to the border police who work
for the federal government.
“I know people that work for the Border Patrol, and they’re really upset because this current administration has really tied their hands up. They’re not really able to do anything,” Lopez
said.
– Mixed impact –
The major political parties see the competing referendums as
offering an opportunity to mobilize more people to vote — on ballot questions at the very heart of the two
presidential campaigns.
Anti-abortion activists demonstrate outside a clinic in Phoenix, Arizona
on April 18, 2024
But the referendums may not have the clear impact on the race for the White House
that activists hope.
Polls show Trump and Harris running neck-and-neck in Arizona, with the Republican holding a very narrow lead.
Both ballot questions, meantime, have drawn strong support and both appear likely to
pass.
So the abortion issue may not be “helping Democrats in the way that they would hope,” said Jenny Brian, a professor of bioethics at Arizona State University.
Many Republican women will vote both to protect abortion rights and to bring Trump
back to the White House, Brian said.
Though abortion is sometimes framed as a Democrat vs. Republican issue,
the Republican Party includes “a broad spectrum of views on the topic,” an issue that also raises conservatives’ concerns
about “government interference,” she added.
The same dynamic applies to immigration, with the tougher language on the Arizona ballot question finding support not
just among Trump Republicans but also “moderates and even many Democrats,” said John Kavanagh,
a Republican and an Arizona state senator.
The 74-year-old Kavanagh is unimpressed by Harris’s recent toughening on migration,
specifically her promise to maintain the partial
closing of the border Biden ordered in recent months.
The vice president, Kavanagh said, is “running away faster from her open-border policy than an illegal immigrant that runs away from the Border Patrol.”

ANGELA HARTNETT’S BEEF & VEAL MEATBALLS
Meatballs are super-quick to make for a weeknight supper and there are many
ways to serve them (see tip). The veal in these
gives a lightness to the result, but you can swap it out for all beef, or flavourful pork
mince. This is a good way to use up any day-old bread hanging around.
The recipe is easy to double up on and freeze so you have a
meal for an emergency.
SERVES 4
4 tbsp olive oil, plus extra for the onion
1 onion, finely chopped
2 garlic cloves, chopped
400g tin chopped tomatoes
200g white bread (day old, if possible)
whole milk (enough to soak the bread)
500g beef mince
250g English veal mince
2 tbsp finely grated parmesan, plus extra to serve
4 anchovies, finely chopped
2 tbsp chopped flat-leaf parsley
salt and freshly ground black pepper
350g dried spaghetti, to serve (optional; see tip)
1 First make a tomato sauce. In a saucepan, heat a dash of olive oil over a medium heat, then add
half the chopped onion and half the garlic, then sauté
for 10 minutes to soften. Add the tomatoes
and when the liquid starts to bubble, reduce to a
simmer and leave to cook, stirring occasionally (about 20 minutes, to create a thick sauce), while you make
the meatballs.
2 In a bowl, soak the bread in the milk until soft.
In another bowl, mix the beef, veal, parmesan, anchovies, half
the parsley and the rest of the onions and garlic.
Then add the soaked bread, lightly squeezing any excess milk from it first.
Mix well and season with salt and pepper. Mould the mixture
into 12-14 meatballs.
3 Put the 4 tablespoons of olive oil in a large frying
pan over a medium heat. When hot, add the meatballs, turning
(for about 5 minutes) to ensure they colour all over.
If necessary, cook in batches so they are not all squashed together, setting each batch
aside on a plate while you cook the remainder.
4 To finish, remove the meatballs from the pan and set aside.
Pour the tomato sauce into the frying pan over a medium heat.
Put the meatballs back into the pan for a further 4-5 minutes to cook through.
Sprinkle with the remaining parsley before serving.
TIP You can serve the meatballs as they come,
or on top of spaghetti. If you would prefer the latter, cook the pasta according to the packet
instructions until al dente. Drain it in a colander, reserving a cupful of the
cooking water to loosen the meatball sauce
if necessary, and then transfer it back to the pan and toss
it with a little olive oil and butter. Put the spaghetti on a serving plate and top with the meatballs
and sauce. Finish with a drizzle of olive oil and a sprinkle of parmesan.

When it comes to capturing my heart with a cuddly creature, it’s the likes of Arnold Schwarzenegger,
75, who’s reinvented himself as the internet’s favourite granddad with his wholesome life with a menagerie
of animals, who has won me over.
The jewel in the crown of his ever-growing
brood of beasts is Schnelly the pig, who joined the family in April last year, making
the star the latest in a long list of celebrities to realise the joys of
a porky pal – along with Ariana Grande, Miley Cyrus and the Beckhams.
I’m completely smitten with the cuteness of pet pigs. I lose hours scrolling
through Instagram, looking at pictures of furry little piglets with
pretty pink snouts.
There are 255,000 Insta posts with the hashtag #petpig and I’ve probably looked at all of them.
Then there’s the 286,000 posts hashtagged #micropig and I’d hazard a guess that I’ve seen all of those
too.
So I’m rather excited to discover that there’s a pig farm
less than an hour from central London, where I
can find out what it’s really like to have a porcine pet.
While celebrities might get away with turning up to photoshoots, TV appearances and fancy restaurants
with all manner of furry creatures, will I get the
same reception if I take a pig for a stroll down the high street?
Samantha Rea from London strolling down the high street in Old Amersham with Astrid, a 16 month old micro pig
The pair stopped off at The Griffin, a private members club, bistro and bakery, for some refreshments after a trot down the
high street
Samantha Rea spent time at the Kew Little Pig Farm in Amersham, Buckinghamshire to learn how to muck out and care for pigs
Learning how to feed hay to the pigs did make Samantha question whether it’s
easier to stick with a dog or cat as a pet
I’m hoping the Kew Little Pigs Farm will help me find out.
It specialises in miniature pigs, which pig lovers can buy
or ‘adopt’ to visit on the farm.
Then there are the day trips. The Piggy Pet & Play package lets visitors ‘pet, brush, groom,
watch and play with the pigs.’ The Pig Enthusiast package can include putting sun cream on the pigs,
and the Comprehensive Guide to Pig Keeping teaches you everything you need to know before buying your own micro pig.
Clearly I must go there!
And so I head to Amersham, in Buckinghamshire,
where Kew Little Pigs Farm is based.
When I arrive, owner Olivia Mikhail looks slightly concerned at the sight
of my Converse trainers and cropped jeans, a combination that will surely
result in splattered shins.
However, Olivia has no idea just how prepared I actually am, because I have packed not only knee high wellies
for my time on the farm, but also my designer heels, for my glimpse into what life’s like as a pig-owning
celebrity.
Arnold Schwarzenegger with Schnelly the pig, who joined his menagerie of pets in April last year
Ariane Grande and Pete Davidson adopted Piggy Smallz during
their short-lived romance in 2018
Comedian John Bishop was left devastated when his rescue pig Milo passed away last year, describing him as the ‘heartbeat’ of the family
Paris Hilton started the chihuahuas in handbags craze,
and is also the proud owner of Princess Piglette
George Clooney, Paris Hilton, Miley Cyrus, Jonathan Ross, Charlotte Church and even the
Beckhams have all kept pigs as pets over the past decade or so, while more
recently Ariane Grande and Pete Davidson adopted Piggy Smallz during their short-lived romance.
Comedian John Bishop gave rescue pig Milo a home for
more than a decade and was devastated when the pet passed away, saying he was the ‘heartbeat’ of the family.
They’re as much a celeb accessory as oversized sunglasses – which is why I’ve brought those with me too.
But first things first. Before I spend an afternoon taking a petite pig for
a stroll, I sit down with Olivia in the Kew Little Pigs cafe, to complete the theory side
of the Comprehensive Guide to Pig Keeping.
It turns out there is quite a lot of admin involved in owning a pig, alongside a rule book thicker than Harry Potter.
Who knew that you needed a license to walk a pig? Who would imagine that
you can’t feed pigs your kitchen leftovers?
It used to be common practice, but has been banned because of the risk of diseases such as African swine flu and foot and mouth disease that
can be spread by consuming contaminated pork products.
Who can fathom having to fill out a form to drive your pig from one place to
another – again for disease control reasons?
After all the admin and mucking out, Samantha was delighted to move on to
the fun part – cuddles with Astrid
Samantha found that mucking out the pig pen was actually a lot more civilised
than picking up poo on a dog walk
Samantha came armed with wellies for her day at the farm,
but made sure to keep it glamorous
After swapping her flimsy trainers for wellies, Samantha felt equipped
to tackle her day on the farm
And who would guess that pigs have to have their own house?
I mean, it’s only got to be about the size of shed, but it’s actually a law to uphold welfare standards.
I suppose none of this is an issue for celebrities who have people to do paperwork
for them – not to mention acres of space – but to me it seems insurmountable.
Olivia senses that my dreams are crushed and attempts to reassure me: ‘It’s really not
that much paperwork. Look, filling in this form would take
two minutes.’
Moving on from the theory, we head outside for the
practical part of the course. Here, in large pens,
are lots of little pigs which are super cute, so this
makes me happy.
I am given a rake to claw the pig poo into a dustpan. Both the rake and
the dustpan have long handles and I like the distance
this creates. It is certainly more civilised than picking up poo in a
flimsy plastic bag on a dog walk.
Clearing away pig excrement with proper equipment which allows you to maintain a civilised, and sanitary, distance makes me wonder if – despite the paperwork – pigs might just
trump dogs.
Samantha was worried she might attract stares walking Astrid through town, but nobody batted an eyelid
Samantha treated herself to a hot chocolate while Astrid enjoyed some pig treats
Samantha swapped her wellington boots for high heels to
glam up to take her pet pig down to the town centre for lunch
Taking a pig out for a walk is trickier than it looks,
and a lot of treats are required to keep things on track
Next, Olivia asks if I would like to feed the pigs.
Yes of course! She hands me some hay that’s stuffed inside what’s basically a large fishnet stocking,
the size of Santa’s sack. The hay sticks out of all the holes, and it’s my job to hang up the sack
in the pig pen, so the pigs can eat from it.
This sounds easy. Only it’s not. ‘NOT THERE! NO! IT’S GOT TO BE HIGHER!
TIE IT ROUND THE POST! NO! NOT LIKE THAT! NO!’
I feel like a failing contestant on The Crystal Maze, only this is
worse because I’m now surrounded by hungry pigs and I
cannot see a panic button.
I swear there was something on Netflix where murdered bodies were dumped in a pig
pen, to be eaten by the pigs. Or maybe the bodies were eaten alive.
This definitely happens all the time, according to TV,
and now I don’t even know which is worse, the prospect of being felled by pigs eating through my ankles, or the pressure to hang the hay correctly.
It is like my challenge on The Crystal Maze has been especially devised
to amuse the inhabitants of hell.
I find myself grateful to make it out of the pig pen alive.
Surely I get to do celebrity stuff now?
Celebrities’ pigs are as stylish as their owners, so
I’ve sourced designer outfits for my trottered chums.
I’d initially looked at diamond chokers by Dior, because what
pig wouldn’t want a diamond collar? But apparently pigs
are happier in harnesses, which fit around
the body, not just the neck.
I hunt for a harness that an A-lister might pick for their
pig, and I am delighted to discover a pink leopard
print harness with a matching lead.
It is by Urban Pup, a pet fashion brand whose website I’ve
now spent more time on than all the other websites in my search history.
There’s the zebra print, the cheetah print, the pink argyle; the
florals, the tartans, and the hearts. There’s the range inspired by Legally Blonde and the pet carrier that resembles a pink
Chanel handbag.
Then there are the socks…
I turn up at the farm with more outfits for the pigs than I have for myself.
I guess this is what it’s like being a pig parent: #SELFLESS
I am introduced to Astrid, a 16 month old micro piglet who’ll fulfill my dreams of walking a pig.
I show Olivia all the outfits I’ve brought from Urban Pup and she
picks out a pink tartan harness with a matching lead.
I want to dress up all the pigs but Olivia says no.
That’s OK. There is probably some law about only one pig at a time looking this stunning.
When Astrid and I are dressed, we head into Old Amersham.
It’s a pretty market town in the Chilterns with cobbled streets and quaint white buildings with beams.
So how will locals feel about a pig on a lead?
I imagine I may be sternly spoken to by a member of the Women’s
Institute. However, it turns out that Old Amersham is perfectly au fait with
celebrity antics, given that Poirot, Midsomer Murders and Four Weddings and a Funeral have all been filmed there.
On my pig keeping course I have learnt that pigs never poo where they eat,
sleep or socialise, because they’re very clean, so from day one, without any training, a pig
will go outside to poo.
I am surprised then, as I arrive in Old Amersham, to
find that Astrid has done her business in her carry box.
I try not to think about this, as I hold her
lead.
Our first stop is the Amersham Museum. I’m not a massive fan of walking around looking at things, but
I hear the museum homes a Tudor dining table that visitors are welcome to sit at.
It is about lunchtime, so I’m hopeful I’ll be served a
Tudor banquet. I quite fancy a tankard of wine and a bit of wild boar.
Unfortunately, Astrid does not, and so, despite being welcomed by museum
director Briony, we leave pretty much as soon as we arrive.
We go for a stroll instead, but I have to scatter pig food pellets to coax Astrid along the pavement.
I guess celebrities get their assistants to walk
ahead, trailing treats to entice the pet pigs in the right direction.
Hard at work: Writer Samantha Rea tried
the Comprehensive Guide to Pig Keeping, which teaches you everything you need
to know before buying your own micro pig
However, doing it without an assistant, I find myself
thinking that it’s definitely easier to walk a dog.
Celebrity life is about lounging in luxurious surroundings, so Astrid and I head
to The Griffin, a private members club, bistro and bakery, that’s
pretty much the Soho House of Amersham.
In the beamed building that dates back to the 17th century, there
are gorgeous leather sofas and cosy cushions. However,
I have learnt on my pig keeping course that pigs are happiest alfresco, so Astrid and I take
a seat on the astro-turf terrace, beneath a pretty parasol that wouldn’t be out of place in a
Cotswolds shoot for Tatler.
It is here, as we relax like A-listers, that Astrid and I are
at our happiest. As I sip a coffee and eye-up a chocolate brownie (I’m being
a celebrity, remember, I don’t actually eat these things), Astrid puts her trotters up on the
seat beside me and enjoys a few pig food pellets.
Clearly this is our natural environment, so it’s probably
just a matter of time before Astrid is snapped up by a celebrity to live life first class.
But for now, Astrid must mooch back to the mud, and I must head
home to wash pig poo off my wellies.
I am chuffed to bits to have spent an afternoon with Astrid, but as
I think it all over, on the train back to Marylebone, I know that I’ll never
keep a pig as a pet.
Aside from all the legal red tape, my lack of space in London,
and the trickiness of trying to take a pig for a walk, there’s always the fear that the micro pig
might turn out to be not so tiny after all.
I’ve seen headlines about 4 ounce “teacup” pigs growing bigger than a bear,
and frankly I find it terrifying. So I’ll leave the pet pigs to the celebrities.
