Tahun 2021 baru saja berakhir. Ledakan petasan, pengendara ugal-ugalan, sampai pancaragam bebunyian seperti mesin sensor dan motor yang dilepas knalpotnya, jadi sesuatu yang selalu didengar saat merayakan tahun baru di Nabire, Papua. Langit menjadi warna-warni. Kepulan asap membubung memenuhi ruang kosong di antaranya. Jika semesta adalah manusia, ia pasti sudah batuk-batuk bahkan sebelum jam dua belas malam. Jika ia adalah anak kecil, ia sudah menangis sejak bunyi petasan pertama. Tapi ia adalah ibu yang iba pada anak-anaknya, para manusia—mereka butuh momen, perayaan, ekspresi, dan lain sebagainya.
Jam lima sore, saya sudah berada di Inikopi, sebuah kedai kopi yang belakangan sering saya kunjungi sebab suasananya yang sepi—sesuatu yang harus saya akui, baik bagi saya, tapi tapi tak baik bagi pemiliknya. Di kedai kopi itu, hanya ada saya, seorang lelaki paruh baya, dan sepasang suami istri pemilik kedai kopi itu. Wahyu, pemilik kedai itu, sedang membersihkan lantai dari debu dan jenis kotoran lainnya. Melihat saya datang, ia membersihkan meja segi empat berwarna coklat dari bahan keramik di depan saya. Terjadi percakapan singkat antara kami berdua sebelum ia bertanya apa yang bakal saya pesan hari ini. Seperti biasa, saya memesan vietnam drip. Setelah ia pergi meracik kopi, saya mengeluarkan laptop dan juga meracik teks.
Hampir jam sepuluh malam, sebuah motor bebek terparkir di halaman kedai. Manfred Kudiai, seorang kawan yang sehari-hari bekerja sebagai jurnalis di Kabar Mapegaa—ia juga menjadi pimpinan redaksi di media daring ini, tiba bersama Frans Yogi, seorang aktivis pasar yang bergiat di Asosiasi Pedagang Asli Papua (APAP). Manfred berjalan menuju saya dengan gaya khas orang mabuk—ia memiringkan tubuhnya ke kiri lalu ke kanan dengan tempo yang cepat sambil melangkah maju.
“Ah, apa!” Bentak Manfred yang saya respons dengan tawa. Saya tahu, ia sedang bertingkah sarkastis dengan menjadi orang mabuk di tahun baru. Entah mengapa, mabuk-mabukan dan tahun baru sudah seperti Adam dan Hawa. Frans Yogi di belakangnya hanya tertawa kecil. Kami lalu bersalaman dan saya menutup laptop di atas meja itu. Manfred lalu memesan kopi susu, dan Fran Yogi memesan lemon tea.
Di atas meja, ada empat gelas minuman. Satu vietnam drip, satu lemon tea, dan dua kopi susu. Satu kopi susu itu milik Nomensen Douw, seorang kawan yang menggambar kegelisahannya lewat tulisan dan fotografi. Ia datang lebih dulu dari Manfred dan Frans, tapi panggilan makan dari kawannya mesti ia sambut sebab merasa kelaparan. Hampir jam sebelas malam, ia sudah kembali dan bergabung dalam obrolan kami.
Pada mulanya obrolan tak karuan berkelindan dari mulut kami. Lalu berfokus pada pasar setelah saya menyinggung tulisan Manfred di Kabar Mapegaa soal statement saya yang agaknya sudah seperti seorang politisi partai tertentu: “Dalam sambutannya, Fauzan menceritakan awal mula keterlibatannya dengan APAP melihat persolan Mama-mama Pasar Papua: ‘Kami melihat atas apa yang diperjuangkan APAP ini tepat. Sebab, proses pembangunan yang jalankan pemerintah tidak sesuai dengan kebudayaan setempat, terutama di Nabire,’ katanya”.[1]
Manfred menulis statement pada kata sambutan saya di Perayaan Natal bersama Mama-mama Pasar Papua yang digelar APAP di Gereja Kristus Raja Nabire. Sebuah kata sambutan yang sebelum tiba di lokasi perayaan itu, tak pernah saya persiapkan. Roberta Muyapa, koordinator APAP-lah yang secara tiba-tiba datang ke arah saya lalu meminta kesediaan untuk memberi kata sambutan. Awalnya saya sempat menolak dengan cara mengajukan Manfred untuk menggantikan saya.
“Ah, sa su bosan lihat anak ini,” jelas Roberta diselingi tawa. Ia dan Manfred memang kawan dekat. Lalu ia memberi saya sebuah alasan yang barangkali sangat normatif: “Biar beda toh,” katanya. Entah mengapa, alasan perbedaan semacam itu selalu saya iyakan. Yang terlintas saat itu hanyalah memberi ucapan selamat natal pada mama-mama pasar yang hadir sebagai seorang muslim, atau sebagai orang pendatang.
Rupanya anggapan itu salah setelah saya menanyakan sambutan seperti apa yang diharapkan APAP pada perayaan ini. Frans Yogi, yang juga hadir di perayaan itu—pada hari Rabu, 30 Desember 2020, mengatakan kalau saya memberi impresi pada APAP serta melihat posisi tawar APAP di Nabire, Papua. Apa yang dikatakan Frans memang hanya bersifat rekomendasi. Sebab saya mengaku pada dia kalau saya tak tahu mesti bilang apa sebab mama-mama pasar sendirilah yang lebih tahu soal pasar.
Di saat berada di atas mimbar gereja itu, saya membicarakan soal pentingnya pembangunan pasar berbasis pengetahuan dan budaya mama-mama pasar Papua, sesuatu yang selama ini juga didorong oleh APAP. Selain itu, saya membicarakan konteks kebudayaan Papua yang ketika berjualan, posisi duduknya selalu setara dengan apa yang ia jual—sesuatu yang saya dengar ketika berdiskusi dengan Roberta beberapa minggu sebelumnya.
Hal ini lebih lanjut dijelaskan oleh Frans pada pertemuan kami berempat di Inikopi. Pada mulanya saya bertanya, pasar seperti apa sebenarnya yang dicita-citakan oleh APAP. Dari pengakuannya, mereka mendorong pasar khusus bagi mama-mama pasar Papua. Tentu saja, saya penasaran, khusus dalam pengertian macam apa yang ia maksud. Ia lalu menceritakan pemahaman pribadinya pada saya.
“Mama-mama Papua kalau menjual itu mereka tidak sekadar duduk tunggu jualan laku. Mereka juga menganyam,” jelasnya. Dengan kondisi seperti itu, mama-mama pasar Papua tidak bisa menganyam ketika ia berada di tempat duduk dengan jualan setinggi dada atau perutnya. Sebab kata Frans, anyaman biasa diletakkan di paha mereka. Hal itu sudah menjadi kebiasaan ketika menganyam.
Dari penjelasan itu, ia membayangkan pasar tidak sekadar menjadi ruang distribusi saja, tapi juga ruang produksi dengan anyaman untuk dipakai sehari-hari atau juga dijual. Sehingga model pasar yang cocok seperti itu adalah model melantai.
Ketika mendengar penjelasannya soal kebiasaan menganyam mama-mama Papua, saya jadi ingat kegiatan Bom Benang yang diinisiasi Quiqui di Makassar. Saya terlibat di dalamnya sebagai penulis dan peneliti juga fasilitator. Kegiatan ini, selain memberdayakan ibu-ibu dengan menawarkan penghasilan dari proses kreatif ini, ruang konsultasi, teman cerita, juga menjadikan merajut sebagai media terapi.
Sebuah survei online internasional berskala besar tentang perajut menemukan bahwa para respondennya memperoleh berbagai manfaat psikologis yang dirasakan dari praktik tersebut yakni: relaksasi; terbebas dari stress; rasa pencapaian; terhubung dengan tradisi; meningkatnya kebahagiaan; mengurangi kecemasan; meningkatkan kepercayaan diri; serta kemampuan kognitif (meningkatkan daya ingat, konsentrasi, dan kemampuan untuk mengatasi masalah). Dalam konteks yang lebih klinis, memperkenalkan kegiatan merajut kepada pasien anoreksia di rumah sakit telah menyebabkan berkurangnya rasa cemas yang mengakibatkan gangguan makan. Sekitar 74% dari peserta penelitian menggambarkan perasaan “terdistraksi” atau “terhindarkan” dari keadaan emosi dan kognitif yang negatif ini, seperti perasaan lebih rileks dan nyaman. Lebih dari setengah peserta mengatakan mereka merasakan stres yang lebih sedikit, rasa pencapaian, dan lebih jarang untuk bertindak sesuai dengan “pikiran yang menganggu” mereka.[2]
Menjadi menarik melihat data yang ada soal manfaat mengayam dalam perspektif ekonomi, psikologi, dan kesehatan, dengan bayangan pasar ‘melantai’ yang dibicarakan Frans. Setidaknya ada dua hal yang saya pikirkan, pertama barangkali berjualan di pasar dengan menganyam bagi mama-mama Papua bukan saja soal penghasilan, tapi juga untuk mendistraksi pikiran-pikiran negatif dari persoalan mereka di rumah. Kedua, menganyam sambil berjualan mencitrakan bertapa mama-mama pasar Papua begitu multi-tasking.
Sehari sebelumnya, 29 Desember 2020, saya ikut urun daya pada pernikahan sepupu saya di daerah Kimi, Nabire. Hari itu sapi dipotong pada halaman mesjid Al-Hikma Kimi. Setelah dipotong-potong, daging diangkut dan dibawa ke rumah sepupu saya. Saya, adik saya, dua kakak sepupu saya, dan serta dua orang kerabat kebagian membersihkan perut sapi dan usus di kali tepat samping mesjid itu. Ketika sedang membersihkan, saya melihat seorang mama-mama Papua melintas. Yang mengagumkan bagi saya adalah tak ada tangan dari mama-mama Papua itu yang kosong: tangan kanannya memegang seorang anak yang duduk dengan posisi dua kakinya berada di pundak mama-mama Papua itu; tangan kanannya memegang kantong plastik berisi dua batang es batu; mulutnya sibuk mengarahkan anaknya yang satu untuk menyebrang kali yang sedang kami tempati membersihkan perut sapi dan usus. Hal semacam itu tentu sudah akrab dengan mata saya. Tapi entah mengapa, saya tak pernah kehilangan rasa kagum menyaksikan hal itu berlangsung di hadapan saya. Betapa multi-tasking-nya mereka. Soal kekuatan, jangan ditanya. Mereka bisa mengangkut bayi yang berbaring dalam noken dengan meletakkan tali noken itu di kepala mereka. Selain tali, mereka biasa mengangkut sayur-sayuran dalam noken itu.
Sayangnya, kebiasaan mama-mama pasar Papua seperti menganyam juga soal ke-multi-taking-ang mereka tak pernah menjadi pertimbangan ketika membangun pasar. Hal ini barangkali lantaran indikator pembangunan selalu berbasis infrastrukur—konsep modern, misalnya, atau dengan cara pandang yang estetik, bukan dengan basis kebudayaan. Hal ini segendang sepenarian dengan diskusi kami malam sebelum tahun berganti tadi. Banyak sekali yang kami obrolkan. Beberapa hal kemudian menjadi semacam resolusi bagi masing-masing kami juga komunitas yang kami tempati. Rencana-rencana kolaborasi menjadi satu usul yang tak kalah penting untuk menjangkau hal-hal yang mesti dikerjakan bersama.
Diskusi sesekali disela oleh bunyi ledakan petasan juga suara motor yang seolah-olah menantang kami. “Sudah… maklumi saja. Ini tahun baru,” kata Frans Yogi. Tentu saja saya maklum. Ledakan petasan itu pula yang menghentikan diskusi kami setelah bunyinya begitu keras dan intens, petanda tahun baru tiba. Saya memeriksa gawai, dan benar saja, sudah pukul 00.02 WIT. Kami lalu membayar minuman yang kami pesan, saya keluar di depan kedai kopi itu sambil melihat langit warna-warni itu.
Di seberang jalan, beberapa anak remaja membakar petasan di tengah jalan. Hal ini membikin pengendara yang lewat mesti ke luar jalur aspal untuk menghindari ledakan itu. Tiba-tiba, seorang anak remaja berbaju hitam mengangkat bambu hijau di depan tempat mereka berdiri. Ia mengarahkan bambu itu pada dua remaja lainnya yang hendak menyebrang dari lorong samping mereka berdiri. Untuk ditahan oleh dua kawannya, dan remaja yang ditodong dengan bambu itu segera melarikan diri.
Lelaki remaja itu rupanya mengonsumsi bobo—jenis minuman lokal yang membikin kepala pusing alias mabuk. Saya lalu ingat Manfred ketika baru tiba di kedai kopi itu tadi. Rupanya Manfred memang mabuk, tapi ia mabuk pinang—sesuatu yang juga saya alami saat masih duduk di bangku SMA. Saat itu saya hanya bisa tertidur di halte Terminal Oyehe lengkap dengan seragam sekolah dalam kondisi membolos.
Lima belas menit di tahun yang baru, kami memutuskan untuk pulang ke rumah. Nomen bersama Frans, dan saya bersama Manfred. Motor yang dipakai oleh Manfred dan Frans ke Inikopi, rupanya milik Fransiskus Pekei, yang juga seorang anggota APAP. Motor itu sudah dibawa pulang oleh Fransiskus sebelumnya.
Dalam perjalanan pulang mengantar Manfred, saya membawa motor dengan sangat hati-hati. Kebetulan rumah kami searah, di daerah Kalibobo, Nabire. Kehati-hatian saya tentu saja beralasan. Saya begitu takut dengan orang mabuk yang mengendarai motor. Bisa saja tiba-tiba mereka muncul dari depan lalu menabrak kami berdua. Selain itu, saya juga menghindari petasan yang dilempar di tengah jalan.
Baru beberapa puluh meter berjalan, di depan Lapangan Futsal Karya Papua, seorang pengendara dalam kondisi mabuk jatuh dan bobo yang ia bawa berhamburan di jalan. Saya mengetahui itu dari baunya yang menyeruak di sekitarnya. Hal itu membikin saya tambah pelan. Saya pikir, resolusi pertama saya di tahun baru adalah selamat sampai di rumah. Sebab seperti kejadian tahun ini yang tak pernah kita duga bentuk dan wujudnya, jalanan di Kota Nabire saat tahun baru punya kondisi yang sama.
